The National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia, INEFC, is proud to host the ECSS Congress in 2013
INEFC is a higher education centre set up by the Government of Catalonia whose mission is to train physical education and sports professionals and help them specialise and improve, as well as carrying out scientific research. Originally founded in 1975, INEFC joined the Barcelona Olympics’ spirit and moved to its current headquarters in the Olympic ring area in 1992.
INEFC has two academic centres, one in Barcelona and one in Lleida, which are academically affiliated to the Universities of Barcelona and Lleida respectively. These campuses house a staff of over 100 lecturers with recognized experience in education and professional practice in various areas of physical education and sport.
The courses offered by INEFC include the undergraduate degree in Physical Activity and Sports Science and over a dozen masters degrees in various related fields as well as PhD programmes. Continuous training and sports instructor qualification courses complete our academic offer. In 2011, we had a total of 1,600 undergraduate students, over 300 postgraduate students and another 500 people taking part in our continuous education courses. Both in undergraduate and postgraduate courses, we provide work placement opportunities to our students thanks to our continuous effort to sign collaboration agreements with companies and institutions in the field of physical activities and sports sciences.
Resulting from our international outlook, the INEFC Global project was set up to develop postgraduate training internationally. Through this project, postgraduate courses have been jointly organised and collaboration agreements have been signed with several universities from eight different countries in Latin America so far.
INEFC is a leading contributor in research and innovation in the fields of physical education and sports, both through in-house projects by its three research groups recognized by the Government of Catalonia for the period 2009-2013: the Sport Sciences Research Group (GRCE), the Group of Social and Educational Research on Physical Activity and Sport (GISEAFE) and the Emerging Research Group on Sport Games (GREJE); and via joint projects with other institutions, such as the High Performance Centre (CAR), the Catalan Sports Council (CCE), or fellow universities.
Moreover, INEFC offers annual grants valued at over 400.000 EUR to support PhD students to develop research joining some of the INEFC high-profile research teams.
Both centres, Barcelona and Lleida, have highly specialised labs in Biomechanics; Physiology and functional assessment; Kinanthropometry; Technological innovation; Social and Educational research; Psychology and motor learning; Motor behaviour; and Motor skills observation.
Also, the Catalan Sports Observatory, developed by INEFC, gathers, processes and publishes information on the sport phenomenon in Catalonia to help policy makers and decision makers in the field of sports.
Similarly, INEFC sponsors the scientific journal Apunts.Educación Física y Deportes, which has been our finest ambassador in all Spanish-speaking countries for over 25 years.
